Dates 2010

Price: £690 (excluding flight)

“There is absolutely nothing I could fault in either the organisation of the trip or the trek itself. Not only was thought and effort put in both before and during the trip but also the leader / guides appeared to genuinely care and hopefully enjoyed the trip themselves as well. I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending this trip to others.”
Roger Barwell, Picos de Europa 2008

The Picos de Europa lie only 15 kms from the sea but the peaks soar dramatically to 2600m. The range is split into three massifs separated by rivers and deep gorges where golden eagles, griffons, and egyptian vultures are a common sight, in fact, a veritable natural paradise for a diverse variety of flora and Fauna. The region is also rich in culture, a traditional style of farming and small settlements of attractive old stone buildings.

Walking in evening sun with the central massif as a backdrop

With a group of no more than twelve, the trip includes some truly classic mountain walking with long days on rocky and exciting terrain. We spend the first two days hiking in the mountains and gorges of the Eastern Massif, returning to our comfortable valley base each evening.

Now we move west to the isolated village of Cain from where we walk through the precipitously awe-inspiring Garganta del Cares. Following an overnight stay in Poncebos we climb to the base of the Picos’ most celebrated peak, El Naranjo de Bulnes, Picu Urriellu where we will spend the night. An exciting traverse that takes in the summit of Pena Vieja (2613m) for an unrivalled panorama of the area followed by a night in a unique mountain hotel.
