This classic traverse takes us through the rocky heart of the Picos, making use of superbly-located mountain refugios and including the straightforward ascent of several excellent viewpoint peaks. Starting out from the pretty country town of Cangas de Onis in Asturias and finishing in the pretty mountain village of Espinama in the Liebana valley, this is one of Spain’s classic walks

A brief land only Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Cangas de Onis
Rendezvous at the group hotel in Cangas de Onis. A complimentary group airport transfer from Santander is provided. (D)
Day 2 Trekking in Western massif: Pico Cotalba
Transfer to Lago de Enol (1063m / 3488ft) and the start of the day’s walk to the Vegarredonda Refugio (1460m / 4790ft), our overnight accommodation. An afternoon walk to the Mirador de Ordiales, which offers breathtaking views and the nearby summit of Pico Cotalba (2026m / 6647ft). (B,L,D)
Day 3 To the Refugio Marques de Villaviciosa
Against the often snow-capped backdrop of Peña de Santa Castilla we traverse the length of the western massif to climb our objective Jultayu (1940m / 6365ft) boasting a dizzying drop straight down into the Cares Gorge and the village of Cain. We sleep in the Refugio Marques de Villaviciosa (1630m / 5348ft), perched in an impressive mountain landscape. (B,L,D)
Day 4 Traverse the Cares Gorge
Today we make a memorably steep descent of nearly 1200 metres (3950 feet) through the Canal de Trea into the Garganta del Cares and complete this iconic and precipitous gorge to emerge in Puente Poncebos where we spend the night. (B,L,D)
Day 5 To the Naranjo de Bulnes
Today our walk takes us through ever more dramatic high mountain terrain to the base of El Naranjo and our Refugio which is situated beneath this imposing and dramatic wall of orange limestone. one of the most famous pieces of rock Europe. (B,L,D,)
Day 6 Across the Macizo Central
Our journey continues south through a wildly graphic landscape of towers, spires and sheer rock faces. As the terrain steepens we will find ourselves climbing steeply to Collado Horcadas Rocas (2,344 meters), an outstanding viewpoint, before heading upwards for a further 150 meters to the summit of Torre Horcadas Rocas and 360 degree views of the entire Picos mountains. Day 7 Climb Valdecoro and descend Espinama
This morning we explore the most southern part of the Central massif, culminating in the ascent of Pico Valdecoro (1841 meters) which has fantastic views. We arrive back in the valley in time to explore the village before our last night celebratory dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 8 Visit Potes and Airport Transfer
A morning visit to the traditional market town of Potes followed by a picnic lunch before transferring to Santander Airport. (B,L)
